If you were told that a mixture of retro music and current pop hits are taking the internet by storm, you would be forgiven for being at least a little surprised. But that is exactly what Scott Bradlee and his Postmodern Jukebox band are doing. A pianist who fell in love with jazz music at a young age, Bradlee decided to set himself the task of reworking pop songs to give them a decidedly vintage flavour. This resulted in some incredible combinations, from a 1950s doo wop version of Miley Cyrus’ We Can’t Stop to swing Drunk In Love by Beyoncé. Overplayed chart toppers have been given a fresh lease of life by being merged with a completely different style, and the nostalgic feel of the songs seemed to appeal to the people of the internet. The videos soon went viral, gaining millions of views. The merging of the different genres demonstrates that pop music does not have to be rigid in its style. The ScottBradleeLovesYa Youtube channel allows music that was very popular in past decades to be introduced to a whole new generation. Scott Bradlee and Postmodern Jukebox have just started a European tour, so if you want a whole new concert experience, be sure to get tickets quickly! We love the flapper-style Fancy by Iggy Izalea, and a vintage Thrift Shop. However, our absolute favourite is Burn by Ellie Goulding, sung in the style of a 60s girl group; there are few songs that can’t be improved by a shoo-bee-doo-bop!

VIDEOS: BBC Radio 1’s Live Lounge

Videos

The idea is simple: a well-known artist does a cover of a chart-topping song and plays it live on the radio. From this concept some amazing covers have been created, as performers have been given the unique opportunity to do their own take on a chart hit. Cue genre-bending, intriguing and surprisingly clever performances from a whole spectrum of stars, from Miley Cyrus to The 1975. You want a reggae version of Lana Del Rey’s Summertime Sadness by Rizzle Kicks? It’s here. What about Tom Odell’s soulful tones warbling along to the originally sugary-sweet I Knew You Were Trouble? They’ve got it. Love Gabrielle Aplin but hate One Direction? Her version of Best Song Ever might just change your mind. Admittedly, these covers can sometimes be a bit hit-or-miss as the fusion of styles doesn’t always work. However, the Live Lounge gives you the chance to see your favourite artist experiment with a whole new style. The sessions are usually played live on BBC Radio 1 during the day, but if you miss it then the performance is uploaded to BBC Radio 1’s Youtube channel. Listen in and you may discover that your new favourite song is something completely different to what you expect.
